Terry Straus examines her place in the world through visual images. She often combines deep natural space and graphic color and shape. Visual metaphors, symbols, and art history references are found in her work.
Ms. Straus studied drawing at the Cooper Union Scholarship Program and also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s College and a Master’s from Brooklyn College, and received an Artist-in-Residence Scholarship from the Art Students League. She worked as the Associate Art Director of Forum magazine and as the Assistant to Creative Director of an advertising agency before becoming a tenured art teacher in the New York City high school system. As a member of the Allied Artists Association, Ms. Straus has exhibited her paintings, drawings, and prints widely in galleries, and her monoprints were included in a PBS special during the 1990s.
Charcoal series, begun in 2015, examines the mid-day winter sky. The sun and moon, both visible in the winter sky, seem to play in tangled mid century power lines.
The SUNSET series challenges the viewer by visually asking, “Where are you standing?” The painterly series develops deep space using abstract expression techniques in the application of paint. Paint may have been: washed off with turpentine, applied thickly, varnished in areas. Strong compositions often recall Z or X shapes. Straus sources boutique handmade and vintage oils, and grinds pigments and walnut oil and varnish.
Photographs printed and collaged, The series tell the story of newfound love through metaphor. Embracing lovers gaze at an idealized day through the dappled light of a crown canopy.
Collages from this series are mounted on acid free board and signed on the back of the board. Frames are wood and are fitted with screw exes and wire. Each collage is labeled on the back.95.

Earlier variations of INAMORATA , INAMORATO have been placed, often by charity auction including: Meals on Wheels, Inspire Nyack, Ronald Mc Donald House, and many others. I am honored to donate, so do contact me.
I do still have several important breakthrough pieces which bridge the development of the series. Look for them at studio or gallery exhibitions.
INAMORATA, INAMORATO began in 2010 and is now closed. I will not be creating new works in this series.
Oil paint on canvas, this serise describes the suburban condition through natural landscape and pop-art images. The man-made and natural elements and palettes enrich each other.
